06/26/2012:  Do You Really Need That Venti Hazelnut Latte with Whipped Cream?

How much does it take to feed 20 children around our world for one year? 7,128 meals.

How easy is it? The Bluewater team found out last week with a visit to a local Feed My Starving Children branch in nearby Chanhassen, MN.

As a storm was brewing outside, some of Bluewater’s finest were safely stowed away in the Chanhassen’s Feed My Starving Children packaging room, hoping that with a dose of healthy competition, a dedicated FMSC staff, and music keeping us on beat, we could make a small dent in FMSC’s goal of lessening the hunger epidemic and reaching children in nearly 70 countries around the world.

Yet with the 7,128th bag sealed, our FMSC leader helped us realize sometimes giving time is not always enough. There are also some easy ways to continue to help:

  • Downsize that daily Starbucks coffee purchase and donate the money you saved. Good for an organization, good for your coffee addiction, and good for you!
  • Skip dessert or order water when dining out and put that saved money towards a good cause.
  • Rent a movie rather than going to the theater (who wants to spend $15 on Piranha 3D and stale Skittles anyways?)

While these changes may seem insignificant, I think they truly can add up and help make a big difference.

In the end, I not only walked away feeling great, aware of the easy changes I can make, but was even able to come away with new insights of those working just a few feet away. From a shared love of the Hunger Games (Team Gale!), to an agreement that it’s always better to read a book before seeing the movie adaptation, working with Feed My Starving Children was a great way to connect with coworkers outside the office.

In what other ways can your office come together and give back? Share your stories if you’ve been involved in some great non-profit work with your company!
