Influencer marketing has taken off over the last couple years and has become one of the best ways to engage with consumers through social media. So what is influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing is a type of marketing that uses leaders or people with thousands of followers to drive your brand’s message. Instead of marketing directly to your target market, you pay influencers to market for you to that target market. Influencer marketing has quickly become one of the fastest growing online customer acquisition method, which you can see in the graph below.
The reason this has been successful for a lot of major brands is because when it comes to purchasing decisions, consumers trust the opinions of family, friends or people they’re connected with on social media. One of my favorite influencers is Sara Hopkins. When Vine was launched, she was a recent college graduate working at her local news station. Sara began making Vines and now has a following of nearly 1 million and over 600 million vine loops.
Many of her fans comment on her Vines asking her about her makeup and hair routines so Lancôme took advantage of this – they paid her to create content with their products. Sara created two vines with Lancomè and received over 2.1 million views. Sara, like many other influencers has also worked with other major brands like Comcast, OnStar, Wendy’s, SoulCycle, CocaCola and Verizon.
To do influencer marketing the best, many major brands are developing long-term relationships with these top influencers to turn them into brand advocates. I’ve seen major brands like Coca-Cola and Digiorno’s hire a group of influencers to put out several vines, instagrams and tweets for one campaign – which have had great results.
